What to see in Kota Kinabalu, where to go, when to visit, and how to get around Sabah's capital in Borneo.
Kota Kinabalu, often shortened to KK, is the capital of Sabah on the island of Borneo, Malaysia. It sits on the northwest coast facing the South China Sea, with rainforest and mountains rising just behind it. For most travelers, Kota Kinabalu is the first and last stop in Sabah, and the natural base for exploring everything the state has to offer, from island beaches to Mount Kinabalu itself.
Unlike many capital cities, Kota Kinabalu is compact and easygoing. You can walk most of the city centre in under an hour, and within a short drive you’re at a jungle waterfall, a cultural village, or a jetty heading out to tropical islands. This guide covers what the city is, its history, what to see, and how to plan around it.
Kota Kinabalu began as a small fishing settlement called Api-Api. Under British colonial administration, it was developed and renamed Jesselton in 1899. The town was almost entirely destroyed by bombing near the end of World War II, and only a handful of pre-war structures survived, including the Atkinson Clock Tower.
After the war, the town was rebuilt, and in 1967 it was renamed Kota Kinabalu after Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia’s highest peak. Today the city blends colonial-era landmarks with modern towers, malls, and a waterfront built for sunset watching rather than shipping.
Kota Kinabalu’s city centre runs along a roughly 1.6 km stretch, easy to cover on foot in a leisurely one to two hours. It mixes hawker stalls and coffee shops with seafood restaurants, and shopping ranges from street-stall souvenirs to air-conditioned malls like Suria Sabah and Imago.
The waterfront is the heart of the city after dark. It’s where locals and visitors gather for sunset over the South China Sea, followed by dinner and nightlife along a strip of bars, clubs, and restaurants.

The best-known sunset spot in the city and the centre of KK’s evening dining and nightlife scene.
A weekly street market selling local produce, street food, and handicrafts. It’s the easiest way to see everyday Kota Kinabalu life in one place.
Built in 1902, the Atkinson Clock Tower is one of the only structures to survive World War II. It now connects to the Signal Hill Trail, a forest walkway leading up to panoramic views over the city and coastline. Read our full Atkinson Clock Tower guide.
Often called the Floating Mosque for the way it sits beside a lagoon, this is one of the most photographed landmarks in the city.
A dense, lively market area for dried produce, handicrafts, and souvenirs from Sabah, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
Five islands just off the coast, including Manukan and Sapi, reachable by a short boat ride from Jesselton Point. This is where most visitors go for beach time, snorkelling, and clear water.
A guided cultural experience showing how five of Sabah’s indigenous tribes traditionally lived, cooked, and built homes, with a performance included.
Set in Penampang, this village tells the story of Monsopiad, a Kadazan-Dusun figure, with demonstrations of traditional skills and a cultural performance. Book a Monsopiad Cultural Village tour to explore Kota Kinabalu’s village life.
Kota Kinabalu works as a base for trips further afield, without long travel times.
Kota Kinabalu has a tropical climate, warm and humid year-round, so planning is more about rainfall than temperature.
