Most visitors heading to northern Sabah drive straight through Kota Marudu on the way to Kudat Sabah and the Tip of Borneo. That is a shame, because this district has a lot more to offer than a fuel stop. It has a jungle park on the edge of Kinabalu Park, a waterfall you can trek to, a mountain you can climb in a day and a coastline with a real place in Borneo’s history.
Where Kota Marudu Is and How to Get There
Kota Marudu is the district capital in the Kudat Division of Sabah, about 130 km north of Kota Kinabalu. It sits on the highway that connects the state capital to Kudat, so it works well as a stopover or a base for the northern part of the state. Kota Belud is roughly an hour back toward Kota Kinabalu, and Kudat is around ninety minutes further on.
From Kota Kinabalu, expect a drive of about two and a half hours, depending on traffic and road works. Minivans and shared taxis run the route, but they only take you to town. The best sights are spread out, and Serinsim has no direct bus, so having your own vehicle or a driver makes the trip far easier.

Book Your TourA Short Look at the Town’s History
The name Kota Marudu means the fort at Marudu. It comes from a stronghold built by the local leader Syarif Osman near Marudu Bay in the 1800s to resist British North Borneo rule. The fighting there in 1845 is remembered as the Battle of Marudu Bay.
Before that, the area was known as Bandau, a name linked to a buffalo-like creature in Dusun folklore. The district is still home mostly to the Dusun people, along with a Chinese community, and you can see both influences in the town’s food and shophouses.
Serinsim: The Main Reason to Visit
Serinsim, also written Sorinsim, is a substation of Kinabalu Park and the best nature stop in the district. It lies about 30 to 40 km from Kota Marudu town along a paved road. Locals come here for picnics, camping and swimming in the cool Kanarom River, and the facilities are basic but tidy.
There is more here than a riverside swim. A short jungle trek leads to Misumpak Waterfall, a 12 metre drop with a natural pool at the base. A longer trail goes to a bat cave about 5.5 km from the park compound. Both treks need a guide, which you can arrange through Sabah Parks.
Serinsim also has a deer farm and a few small historical sites linked to Dusun stories, including the grave of the warrior Sigunting, who fought British forces in the late 1800s.

Climbing Mount Nombuyukon
Mount Nombuyukon starts from the Serinsim substation and stands at about 1,600 metres. It can be done as a day climb, with roughly five hours up and a full day of around ten hours for the return trip. A guide is required.
It is a good option if you want a mountain experience without the permits, crowds and overnight stay that come with Mount Kinabalu.
Other Things to Do Around the District
In town, take a look at the corncob roundabout in Langkon. Kota Marudu is well known for its maize, and the annual Pesta Jagung (Maize Festival) brings exhibitions, competitions and traditional sports. If your dates are flexible, it is worth timing a visit around it.
Sagabon Park, an agricultural research site by Buyut Lake, is a quiet stop for anyone who likes a slower pace. The town has a handful of local coffee shops and eateries, so you can break up the drive without any planning.
When to Go and What to Plan For
Rain can fall in any month here, so trails are more pleasant in the drier part of the year and early in the day. Bring proper shoes for Serinsim, a light rain jacket and cash, since small towns and park counters do not always take cards.
Most travelers give Kota Marudu one full day or one night. If you are continuing to Kudat, it also makes a good halfway break, since the drive from Kota Kinabalu to the northern tip is long to do in one go.
Getting Around Without the Stress
The hardest part of visiting Kota Marudu is the distance between places. Town, Serinsim and the coast are all a drive apart, and public transport does not link them.
