Explore Kota Kinabalu on Foot with City MPV Travel
Kota Kinabalu was called Jesselton during the colonial period, and much of the old town was lost in the Second World War. This Kota Kinabalu city walking tour follows the places that remain and the places that were rebuilt, so you can see how a small colonial port became the capital of Sabah.
The distance between stops is short. Your guide explains each place as you arrive, so there is time to look, ask questions and take photos without being rushed.
Along the way you move through three sides of the city: the green space of City Park, the painted lanes of Kampung Air, and the working market by the waterfront. Together they show history, daily life and local food in one loop.
Why Walk Kota Kinabalu with a Guide?
Many landmarks in the city look plain on their own. A wooden clock tower, an open field or a mural lane only make sense once someone tells you what happened there. A local guide connects the stops, answers questions on the spot and points you to good places to eat and visit next.

From Jesselton to Kota Kinabalu: What You Will Hear
Jesselton was renamed Kota Kinabalu in the late 1960s, after Mount Kinabalu. Very little pre-war architecture survived the bombing of 1945, which is why the Atkinson Clock Tower stands out. Finished in 1905, it was built in memory of Francis George Atkinson, the first District Officer of Jesselton, who died of malaria at the age of 28.
Padang Merdeka, Australia Place and the Sabah Tourism Board building, once the Jesselton Post Office, each add another layer. Your guide ties these stops together so the history reads as one story.
Tea Time on the Walk
Before the final stop, the group sits down at a local eatery for nasi lemak, kaya butter toast and a cup of teh tarik or coffee. It is a proper rest, and a simple way to try everyday Sabahan food without planning a meal.
